Guide for authors

March 2002

  1. Articles concerning anesthesiology or medical science relative to anesthesia that have not been published or submitted for publication in totality or in part elsewhere are eligible for consideration. Manuscript submitted for review for publication should be sent to the Editorial Committee in the following address:

  2. Manuscript submitted for review is, in principle, literarily limited to English. Manuscript written in Chinese if accepted is to be published in a special supplement as an accompaniment with the December issue and an abstract in English is also required. With the exception of foreign submission from a place outside R.O.C. the manuscript in English (by local authors) should be complemented by a Chinese abstract. The original text submitted should be type-written, double-spaced, on A4 white bond paper; three additional copies are required. In format, there should be margin of at least 1 inch in width at the top, bottom, and on both edges of each page. Page number should be placed at the center of the bottom margin of the sheet. The published articles are categorized into original article, review article, case report and correspondence. The components of the text should be arranged in sequence as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references. If an acknowledgement is deemed desirable it should be inserted in the space immediately following discussion. Tables and figures with captions are placed in the rear of the text. An acknowledgement form of submission for publication (see next page) is prerequisite and its contents including the signatures of all authors must be clearly and entirely completed. This form should be enclosed in an envelope together with the text. The requirements below are modified in accordance with the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (N Eng J Med 336:309-315,1997).

    Title page. The title page should contain the title of the manuscript to be published, the names of all authors in full, their relevant degree or degrees conferred, the institutions with which they are affiliated, the name of the institution where the work has been accomplished, the name of the designated person and his address (Fax and E-mail address) for reprints, an abbreviated heading as the running title. The name of each author should be written clearly and correctly with the family name last, as Kin-Kin Ko, for example. Authorship is restricted only to direct participants and the authors should not exceed seven in number. The title page should be numbered as page 1.

    Abstract. A summary of not over 500 words (or 400 Chinese characters) which serves to tell the gist of the article, with mention of the background, methods, results and conclusions of the work should be placed on the second page. Key words must be written and arranged in accordance with Index Medicus format. Abbreviations except those that approved by the International System of Units for length, mass, time, are strictly limited to eight in number and placed on this page. Likewise, a case report or review article requires an abstract of less than 500 words for a text written in Chinese (or 400 Chinese characters for English text), which includes the title, key words and the names of authors in full. It had better appear in the form of short brief without its particulars sectioned in paragraphs with subtitles.

    Text. The text should include introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion. Written inform consent must be obtained from the patient if he is recognizable in any picture submitted. Permission must be obtained from the original authors and publishers if reproduction of their tables or illustrations that have been published elsewhere are to appear in the text.

    Acknowledgements. Acknowledgements will be printed in small type. It should be brief and include the references to the source of support that have truly contributed to the making of the work or sources of drugs not commercially available.

    References. References should start on a new page. Number the references in sequence of appearance in the text. Each reference should include the names and initials of its authors, its title and the abbreviated title of the medical or allied journals as the following:

    Journal. Young WL, Prohovnik I, Correll JW, Ornstein E, Matteo RS, Ostapkovich N: Cerebral flow and metabolism in patients undergoing anesthesia for carotid endarterectomy: A comparison of halothane, isoflurane, and fentanyl. Anesth Analg 68:717-723, 1989.

    Book. Obrist WD, Wilkinson WE: Stability and sensitivity of CBF indices in the noninvasive 133-Xenon method. In:hartman A, Hoyer S, eds. Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism Measurement. 2nd ed. Berlin:Springer-Verlag, p30-36, 1985.

    Tables and figures. Tables and figures should be made on a separate sheet. Figures submitted should be in black and white photopicture with the size of 5 by 7 inches. Size of instrument, pathological specimen, and power of microscopic finding must be illustrated. On the back of each illustration, the first author's last name, the number of the illustration referenced in the text, and an arrow with its point aiming upward to indicate the top of the picture should be labeled. The legends should be typed in double-spaced manner on a separate sheet for each illustration. Do not staple, clip or write heavily on the back. Protection against damage must be made during mailing. Color illustrations will be charged at authors own expense.

    Unit of Measurement. Report data as multiples or submultiples should be expressed in accordance with the International System of Units (SI).

  3. As a general rule, the receipt of any manuscript will be acknowledged in form of a notice within two weeks. If such an acknowledgment is not received in a reasonable time, the author should contact the editorial office. Any manuscript submitted with be reviewed by at least two Editorial Board members or consultants assigned by the editor. Authors will usually be notified within ten weeks no matter whether the submitted article is accepted for publication, denied, or subjected to revision before acceptance. However, delays are sometimes unavoidable. Authors are encouraged to send the finalized manuscript in computer diskette. Accepted word processing softwares is Microsoft Office Word 2000 for Windows 98. They should be saved in .doc file. The finalized manuscript will be copy-edited and returned to the author for proof reading.

  4. The accepted article will be published in sequence of the date of acceptance. If a late acceptance is to be published in advance of its schedule to the entreaty of the author because of necessity, the author will have to pay an extra fee for such an arrangement. Authors needing a publication for promotion or merits are encouraged to submit their manuscripts before September each year for early overview and processing.

  5. Reprints are limited to Twenty for each article published free of charge and will be sent to the designated author after the issue. Additional reprints can be supplied at request, provided an application for that is made before print or at least while the article is being printed. Additional reprints necessitates extra payment. Once an article is published, all rights are reserved for Acta Anaesthesiologica Sinica. The author can still hold the rights of patent.
